The Legend of Seven Beans: Baba Budan's Journey

The year was 1670. In the bustling port of Mocha, Yemen, coffee was more than a beverage; it was liquid gold. The Arab world held a strict monopoly on the coffee trade, forbidding the export of fertile beans. To ensure this, every bean was boiled or roasted before leaving the port, rendering it incapable of germination. Exporting a live seed was considered an act of treason, punishable by death.

The Saint and the Pilgrim

Enter Baba Budan, a revered Sufi saint from India on his pilgrimage to Mecca. While traveling through the Middle East, he encountered 'Qahwa'—a dark, invigorating elixir that the locals drank to stay awake during long night prayers. He fell in love with the drink, not just for its taste, but for the clarity and energy it provided.

The Forbidden Act

Baba Budan knew that his homeland of India, with its rolling hills and heavy monsoons, would be perfect for cultivating this miraculous plant. But the ban was strict. Determined to share this gift with his people, he devised a plan. Before leaving Mocha, he took seven fertile coffee seeds—uncooked and raw—and strapped them to his chest, hiding them beneath his traditional robes. Why seven? In Islam, the number seven is considered sacred, and he believed this would protect him on his perilous journey back across the Arabian Sea.

The Birth of an Industry

Miraculously, he survived the voyage without being detected. Upon returning to his hermitage in Chikmagalur, Karnataka, he planted the seven seeds in the courtyard of his shrine in the Chandragiri Hills. They took root in the rich, volcanic soil, nourished by the mist and the shade of the dense jungle.

A Legacy in Every Sip

Those seven seeds flourished into healthy bushes, which then propagated into acres of plantations. Today, the Chandragiri Hills are known as the Baba Budangiri range, a pilgrimage site for both coffee lovers and devotees. The seven smuggled seeds sparked a revolution, turning India into one of the world's largest coffee producers. Unlike the monoculture farms of Brazil, the descendants of those original seeds are still grown today under the canopy of ancient trees, preserving the biodiversity and the unique, shade-grown character of Indian coffee.

Every time you sip a cup of Decimal Coffee, you are tasting a lineage that goes back 350 years to a single act of rebellion, faith, and love.
