The Aeropress is the Swiss Army knife of coffee brewers. Durable, portable, and capable of producing everything from an espresso-style concentrate to a light filter brew, it adds a third critical variable to extraction: gentle air pressure. The act of pressing liquid through a fine filter ends extraction instantly while removing sediment, delivering a cup that is simultaneously clean and full-bodied.
Standard vs. Inverted: What's the Difference?
In the standard method, water begins dripping through the filter cap the moment it hits the grounds, shortening contact time and sacrificing control. The inverted method flips the brewer upside down with the plunger sealed, creating an airtight steeping chamber. Grounds steep in full immersion until you choose to flip and press, giving you absolute precision over extraction time and thermal saturation.
What You'll Need
- Coffee: 17g, medium-fine grind (fine sea salt consistency)
- Water: 250ml at 93–96°C (just off the boil)
- Aeropress: Standard or XL, with a paper filter
- Scale & Timer: For exact reproducibility
The Inverted Method — Step by Step
Before you start: Place a paper filter in the cap and rinse with hot water to eliminate paper taste and pre-warm the cap. Set aside.
- Step 1 — Set Up: Insert the rubber plunger into the Aeropress chamber just enough to form an airtight seal (~1cm). Stand it upside down on your counter so the open chamber faces upward.
- Step 2 — Dose: Add 17g of medium-fine ground coffee into the chamber. Tap gently to level.
- Step 3 — Pour (0:00 → 0:30): Start your timer. Pour 250ml of water (93–96°C) directly over the grounds in a steady stream, ensuring total saturation.
- Step 4 — Stir: At 0:30, give the slurry 3–4 gentle stirs with the Aeropress paddle to eliminate dry pockets.
- Step 5 — Steep (0:30 → 1:30): Screw the rinsed cap (with filter) securely onto the top. Let it steep undisturbed until your timer hits 1:30 minutes.
- Step 6 — Flip: With one hand on the cap and one on the chamber, flip the Aeropress upright onto your mug in one smooth, confident motion.
- Step 7 — Press: Apply gentle, continuous downward pressure. Take 25–30 seconds to press. Stop immediately upon hearing the soft hiss of air—do not crush the spent puck.
Troubleshooting & Adjusting Flavor
- Too Sour / Thin: Grind slightly finer or extend steep time by 30 seconds.
- Too Bitter / Harsh: Grind slightly coarser or lower water temperature to 90°C.
- Plunger resists heavily: Your grind is too fine—ease up and go coarser next time.
Decimal Coffee Pairing: Our shade-grown Chikmagalur Washed Arabica shines brilliantly in the Aeropress, yielding sparkling citrus brightness with a silky, clean body.
